Is that Work I See?
Liqin told me about a job lobang yesterday. One of her friends' company was looking for an accountant, that I might want to send in my CV for a try. An accountant's job is not what I was looking for, but you see, beggars can't be choosers.
(I said not to be desperate, but truly, I am.)
I emailed the girl asking for job details, so that I may customize my cover letter for the job. She came back asking whether I might be interested in what she was doing. The scope of work looked like there were more breadth than accounting - due d, financial reporting for SGX, explore M&A opportunities in developing markets... stuff like that.
It's a company in the food industry, good because it's almost recession proof, although it's not glam like financial services, banking, pharmaceutical or what I was doing, property. And since the company is listed, there are strict compliance requirements to adhere to - what I like. Having done finance in a listed company, I can't imagine NOT working in a listed company. It sounds quite psycho because the loads of reporting kill, but lots of things do go wrong if the books are not properly kept, or if business decisions are made without market shareholders keeping check.
I just had a brief chat with the girl, and she told me it really is a bao-gak-liow (aka Corporate Planning) role. And if I'm willing to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty (one of BBITW's favourite phrase), I'll get lots of exposure to the business. The business has substantial operations in developing markets - China, Vietnam, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, UAE. Might need to do a bit of lone travelling, will learn alot of things. Sounds interesting to me.
I've arranged for an interview with her. Keeping my fingers crossed there.
